Why a Nugget Ice Machine Actually Changed My Water Intake (A Dietitian's Take on Hydration)

I grew up in the 80s doing what basically every kid on my street did for water: drinking out of the garden hose. No water bottles. No hydration flasks with time markers on the side. If you were lucky, you got a juice box, or maybe the school milk program — though as a lactose-intolerant kid, that last one never did much for me.


Hydration just wasn't something anyone thought about, let alone talked about. You drank when you were thirsty, usually from a hose, a tap, or a sip from someone else's cup, and that was that.


So it's a little funny that as an adult dietitian who talks about hydration for a living, I still struggled to drink enough water. I knew the guidelines. I knew the signs of mild dehydration. And yet, for years, I'd get to the end of the day and realize my water bottle was still mostly full.


Then I bought a nugget ice machine (link). And almost overnight, my fluid intake went up — not because I suddenly developed more willpower, but because I finally understood something I hadn't fully appreciated: hydration isn't just about water. It's about the whole experience of drinking it.


Why Hydration Deserves the Same Attention as Fibre

In nutrition, we spend a lot of time talking about fibre — how most people don't get enough of it, how it doesn't provide "energy" in the traditional sense, but how essential it is to how the body functions. Water deserves that exact same conversation, and it rarely gets it.


Water doesn't provide calories or energy. But Health Canada names water as vital for life, noting it's the largest single component of the human body and is essential for metabolic and digestive processes — and Dietitians of Canada, through UnlockFood.ca, sets daily fluid targets specifically to prevent the effects of dehydration, not just to satisfy thirst. That's not a wellness-industry talking point; it's built into national nutrition guidance the same way fibre or protein targets are.

That role in metabolism is where hydration status shows up directly in bloodwork — something I see reflected in labs regularly. A Swedish clinical study (references below) that had healthy volunteers track their intake and then deliberately increase their daily water consumption by roughly 700 mL found that habitual low water intake was associated with larger body fluid volumes, and that concentrated urine — a marker of inadequate hydration — was tied to that fluid retention, with urine osmolality and creatinine concentration dropping measurably once intake went up.


A separate randomized controlled trial in healthy adults found that increasing daily water intake reduced blood urea nitrogen concentration and suppressed the decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate, helping dilute blood waste materials and protect kidney function — a concrete example of hydration showing up on paper, not just in how you feel.

And how you feel matters more than we tend to credit. Dehydration doesn't need to be severe to affect quality of life.

Research out of the University of Connecticut's Human Performance Laboratory found that even mild dehydration — as little as 1.4–1.6% loss of body weight in fluid, which can happen well before you feel thirsty — led to reduced visual vigilance and working memory in men, and increased perception of fatigue and anxiety, while a companion study in women found degraded mood, increased perception of task difficulty, lower concentration, and headache symptoms resulting from just 1.36% dehydration.

A review of hydration and physical performance in team-sport athletes similarly found that even mild fluid deficits are associated with increased fatigue, impaired cognitive function, decreased focus, and reduced psychomotor ability — the kind of "off" day most of us chalk up to just being tired, when fluid balance may be playing a real role.


That's the piece I think gets lost. We treat hydration like a nice-to-have — something you get to if you remember. But fatigue, brain fog, headaches, and that generally "off" feeling by mid-afternoon are often, at least in part, a hydration problem hiding in plain sight. It's not about chasing an exact number of litres; it's about recognizing that this is a legitimate nutritional need with real, measurable consequences when it's not met — the same way we'd talk about inadequate fibre or protein.


Knowing all of that, though, still didn't make me want to drink more water. What actually did that was much simpler.


Hydration Is Sensory, Not Just Nutritional

How much we drink is driven as much by palatability as by physiology, for many of us. Taste, temperature, texture, and even sound all influence whether a drink feels appealing enough to reach for again. If a beverage doesn't feel good to consume, we simply don't consume enough of it — no matter how good our intentions, or our knowledge of BUN levels, are.


That's where the ice comes in.


Why Nugget Ice Specifically Works

Anyone who has tried nugget ice (sometimes called "the good ice," "Sonic ice," or "chewable ice") knows it's different. Here's why the differences matter for hydration:

Texture and crunch. Nugget ice is soft, porous, and made of tightly packed small ice flakes fused together. Unlike a hard cube or a dense sphere, it's genuinely chewable — satisfying to bite into without feeling like you're going to crack a tooth. That crunch turns a passive act (sipping water) into something more sensory and engaging, which for many people — including those who crave oral stimulation or texture variety — makes the whole drinking experience more enjoyable. It's a far cry from a garden hose.


Surface area and temperature. Because nugget ice is made of many small, irregular pieces packed loosely, it has enormous surface area relative to its volume. That means it chills a drink faster and more evenly than a single cube or sphere, and it melts at a rate that keeps a beverage cold without drowning it too quickly. A colder, well-chilled drink is simply easier to drink faster and in larger volumes.


Compare that to the alternatives:

  • Cube/tray ice — hard, slow to chill a drink evenly, minimal surface area, often described as "boring" to drink around

  • Sphere ice — beautiful and slow-melting (great for spirits), but dense, hard, and not remotely chewable — designed to not dilute a drink, which is the opposite of what most of us want in a hydration beverage

  • Bullet/half-moon ice (common in fridge dispensers) — a middle ground, harder than nugget, less surface area, less chew


None of these are "bad" ice. But none of them invite you to keep drinking the way nugget ice does.


Filtering and Taste

The other underrated piece: water quality and taste. Many nugget ice machines use filtered water lines or built-in filters, which matters more than people realize. Chlorine taste, mineral heaviness, or a slightly "off" tap taste is a real barrier to drinking water consistently — even if it's perfectly safe. Filtered, clean-tasting water with ice that doesn't taste stale or freezer-burnt removes one more small friction point between you and your water bottle.


I notice this firsthand every time I move around Ontario. Tap water is not one uniform thing — it genuinely tastes different depending on where you are, because each municipality treats and sources its water differently. In London, I can pick up more of a chlorine taste. In Paris and Guelph, there's a noticeable sodium or mineral note. Here in Niagara, the water has its own distinct taste too — hard to put into words, but it's there. None of these are safety issues; municipal water across Ontario is tested and regulated. But taste differences like these are exactly the kind of thing that quietly discourages people from drinking enough water, even when they know they should.

This is where a good filter earns its keep. I use a Brita filter at home, and pairing that filtered water with the nugget ice machine has made a noticeable difference — the taste is more consistent no matter what the tap water is doing that week, and it removes one more excuse not to reach for a glass.


This is also why flavour matters. A splash of citrus, a few muddled berries, mint, cucumber, or a sugar-free electrolyte flavour packet poured over a cup of nugget ice creates a drink that feels like a treat rather than a chore. The ice becomes a vehicle for flavour delivery too — chewing on ice that's absorbed a little of the drink's flavour is part of the appeal for a lot of nugget ice fans.


The "Experience" Factor Is Legitimate — Not a Gimmick

It would be easy to dismiss all of this as a novelty or a trend (nugget ice has had a very real cultural moment). But from a behavioural nutrition standpoint, this is exactly how sustainable habit change works: you don't out-discipline a habit you dislike — you redesign the environment so the better choice is also the more appealing one.


Making water more textural, more refreshing, colder, better-tasting, and more enjoyable to interact with isn't superficial — it's removing real barriers to a behaviour (adequate hydration) that most of us already know we should be doing more of, and that has measurable consequences on how we feel and function when we don't. I didn't need another lecture on hydration. I needed my water to be more fun to drink. The ice machine did that.


The Nugget Ice Trick for Cutting Back on Juice and Pop

Here's something I didn't expect going in. On the odd occasion when I do want some juice or pop, the nugget ice has become a natural way to make that drink go further. A cup packed with nugget ice needs less liquid to fill it, so a small pour of juice or pop over a big scoop of ice still feels like a full, satisfying drink — and it's easy to split one can or one glass between two people when the ice itself is doing a lot of the work.

That's not about restriction, and it isn't meant to replace cutting juice or pop out entirely — plenty of people do successfully eliminate them, and that's a great goal if it's realistic for you. But for those who find going cold turkey difficult, this is a practical, low-effort in-between step: a smaller pour still feels like a full, satisfying drink, especially when everyone at the table is excited about the ice itself.


There's something about the crunch and the presentation that genuinely gets people enthusiastic — so a shared can of pop over a big bowl of nugget ice ends up feeling generous rather than like a smaller serving.


If you're working on cutting back on sugar-sweetened beverages but find quitting outright hasn't stuck, this is a simple, enjoyable way to scale down without it feeling like a sacrifice.


Don't Forget: Food Is Hydration Too

While we're talking about fluid intake, it's worth remembering that hydration doesn't only come from what's in your cup.


Many whole foods have very high water content and contribute meaningfully to your daily fluid intake — plus they bring fibre, vitamins, and minerals that a glass of water alone doesn't offer:

  • Watermelon — about 92% water, plus electrolytes like potassium

  • Cucumber — about 96% water, one of the most hydrating foods there is

  • Strawberries and other berries — around 90% water

  • Oranges and other citrus — high water content plus vitamin C

  • Lettuce, celery, and zucchini — all in the 90–95% water range

  • Soups and broths — an easy way to combine fluid with nourishment, especially appealing in colder months when cold water is less appetizing


If you struggle with plain water, building more of these into meals and snacks is a legitimate part of a hydration strategy — not a substitute for drinking fluids, but a complementary piece of the puzzle.


The Takeaway

Good hydration habits aren't just about knowing you should drink more water. They're about making water something you actually want to reach for — through taste, temperature, texture, and yes, even the ice.


My nugget ice machine didn't change my knowledge of hydration; it changed my relationship with the glass in front of me. And unlike my 80s hose-water days, it's actually made me pay attention to how much I'm drinking — and to notice how much better I feel when I do.


If you've been struggling to hit your fluid goals, it might be worth asking not "how do I drink more water" but "what would make me actually want to drink more water." Sometimes the answer is genuinely as simple — and as fun — as the ice.
